My Favorite Things

Tonight Zachary was telling me about the new music teacher at school - how he likes to sing OLD songs. "What kind of old songs?" I asked him - just waiting to hear what his response might be. (You know 30 is OLD to a 9 year old.) He mentioned something about raindrops, and the following song came to my mind. It is old - at least older than me - 1965.

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels
Doorbells and sleighbells And schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winter that melts into spring
These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog bites
When the bee stings
When I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don't feel...so bad

And so, it got me thinking. What are my favorite things? When I'm feeling sad, what are the things that I treasure that I could think about? So, here are a few (couple) of my favorite things.

1. I love reading to Zachary at bedtime. I will admit that sometimes hurried schedules and a child who gets rather distracted, many (many, many) nights get in the way of reading on a regular basis. However, I treasure the time of have with my son.

2. I love blow drying Natalie's hair. I know it sounds silly, but I just love it. After her baths, I sit her up on my bathroom counter, and she watches in the mirror while I dry her hair. I wish I had some sweet hair styling skills (I can't even french braid), but none the less, this is one of my favorite things. I treasure this "princess" time with my daughter.

  2. My daughter is afraid of the hair dryer, but I can't wait to do it for her!!! I hate going to bed with wet hair.
